The delegation of the High Negotiation Committee (HNC), headed by Dr. Riad Hijab, the General Coordinator of the Committee, met with the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Mr. Staffan De Mistura today, 21 September 2017, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, where they discussed the efforts of UN mediation in finding a political solution in Syria based on UN resolutions.
Dr. Hijab pointed out that the (HNC) has been keen since the beginning to adopt openness towards other opposition groups as it intends to hold more discussions leading to Riyadh 2 meeting, in order to stress the constants of the revolution and achieve the fair demands of Syrian people and the international resolutions that support these demands, most notably the Geneva Declaration and relevant UN resolutions, especially the UNSC resolution 2245 (2015).
He also stressed the need to make new proposals that help the UN mediation to to overcome the main obstacles represented by the intransigence of the regime, its failure to cooperate with UN efforts, its persistence in committing crimes against the Syrians, and its quest to resolve the conflict through policies of forced displacement and sectarian tensions.
At the same time, Dr. Hijab warned of the attempts of some powers with expansionist agendas to undermine the authority and credibility of the (HNC), and to exploit the political process as a means of restoring the legitimacy that Bashar Al-Assad lost when he used chemical weapons and other internationally prohibited weapons against civilians.
He also warned of the dangers of succumbing to the pressure exerted by Bashar al-Assad’s allies to dominate the UN mediation and push for ignoring the key files in the process such as the files of the detainees, transitional justice and punishing those involved in violations against the Syrian people.
