At his residence in New York, Dr. Riad Hijab, the General Coordinator of the High Negotiations Committee (HNC), met with a delegation of Syrian civil society activists visiting New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Dr. Hijab spoke with activists about the importance of civil society in the Syrian Revolution and in building the future of Syria after the departure of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and building a civil-democratic society based on the rule of law, equality and justice.
The meeting discussed the role of Syrian civil society and the interactive and complementary relationship between civil society organizations and the Syrian opposition institutions, especially the HNC.
Activists spoke of the need to work together to build a pluralistic democratic society in Syria and stressed the importance of cooperation between civil society institutions and political forces.
The activists expressed their support for the role of the HNC and the importance of activating this role and expanding the structure of the Committee, while preserving the constants of the Syrian Revolution, which was launched for dignity, freedom and equality.
Meanwhile, Dr. Hijab highlighted the upcoming opposition conference expected to be held in Riyadh and the expected results, stressing that he is working hard to ensure that civil society has a prominent role in this meeting.
Dr. Hijab reiterated that the Syrian opposition emphasized the political solution is based on the Geneva Communiqué and the relevant international resolutions, and that the real compass that guides the HNC will remain the aspirations of the Syrian people and the pulse of society looking forward to liberation, which means the need for the departure of Bashar Assad and all those involved in the shedding of Syrian blood.
